BRATTLEBORO, VT (MyKeeneNow) A fast-moving fire tore through two mobile homes on Glen Street in Brattleboro early Wednesday morning, sending two people to the hospital and displacing five residents along with two pets.
The fire began shortly before 9 a.m. in a back bedroom of 107 Glen St., according to a news release from the Brattleboro Fire Department. A fire inspector who happened to be in the area for an unrelated rental inspection was the first to spot smoke and quickly called for additional help as flames intensified. Within minutes, the blaze had consumed the trailer and spread to the neighboring home at 109 Glen Street, fueled in part by a 250-pound propane tank that began venting and igniting.
Crews from Brattleboro Fire Department arrived just after 9 a.m. and found the home fully engulfed. The second mobile home had already caught fire from the heat and flames next door. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire to the two structures, bringing it under control just after 10 a.m.
Both homes sustained significant damage and are considered uninhabitable. The American Red Cross and Tri-park Cooperative Housing Corporation are working to find temporary housing for the displaced residents.
The two individuals taken to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital were treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening. No firefighters were hurt.
In total, over a dozen local and regional emergency agencies responded to the fire or assisted in covering Brattleboro while local crews were tied up at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
