BRATTLEBORO, VT (MyKeeneNow) A late-night fire caused significant damage to a house on South Main Street in Brattleboro Sunday, prompting a multi-department emergency response and temporarily displacing one resident.
According to Brattleboro Fire Chief Leonard Symonds in a news release, crews were dispatched shortly before 10 p.m. after reports of a structure fire at 52 South Main St. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find heavy flames engulfing the home.
Captain Emery of Engine 2, the first unit on the scene, initially took command and quickly upgraded the call to a second alarm due to the intensity of the fire, the release said. He and Brattleboro police officers confirmed the home was unoccupied at the time. The sole resident had escaped safely before responders arrived.
Firefighters encountered delays entering the building because debris was strewn across the front yard and entrance, complicating access to the structure. With parts of the building deemed unstable, crews battled the fire from the outside using multiple hose lines.
The blaze was brought under control by 11 p.m., Symonds said, but not before causing extensive fire and water damage throughout the house. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced resident with temporary housing.
One firefighter sustained a minor injury during the operation and was treated on-site by EMS before returning to duty.
Departments from Keene, Guilford, Greenfield, and several other nearby towns responded to the fire or helped cover emergency calls in Brattleboro during the incident. Green Mountain Power and Brattleboro Public Works also assisted on the scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
