WINCHESTER, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A brush fire erupted in the vicinity of Richmond Road and Old Turnpike Mountain Road this afternoon that quickly to a four-alarm emergency due to its rapid spread.

The Southwestern N.H. District Fire Mutual Aid logs show the initial report of the fire came shortly after 2 p.m. Since then, fire departments from across the region, including Keene, Swanzey, Hinsdale, Troy, and Walpole, have joined Winchester in battling the blaze. Additional agencies from Gilsum, Spofford, Richmond, and Chesterfield have also contributed personnel and resources, with Chesterfield taking over coverage at Winchester’s station.

Fire officials explained the blaze was initially estimated to cover 2 to 3 acres but has quickly grown due to strong winds. The fire is now reported to be a mile to a mile and a half deep into the wooded area.

Emergency vehicles, including tankers and brush trucks, are being dispatched to assist in combating the fire.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and it is unclear whether there are any threats to nearby structures. Fire officials continue to monitor the situation closely as the response unfolds.
