KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The City of Keene is considering the installation of a large, changeable banner system across Main Street to promote local events, businesses, and services. The proposed banner would span roughly 80 feet across the street—from Emerald Street to Eagle Court—between The Works Café and Ted’s Shoe & Sport.
The idea is currently under review by city staff and committees, with community feedback playing a central role in shaping the next steps.
The concept was most recently discussed during an April 24 Municipal Services, Facilities and Infrastructure committee meeting, where city officials, including Public Works Director Don Lussier, presented four design options. One potential setup involves suspending cables between buildings, which may be more feasible on nearby West Street due to a shorter span and reduced sag. Another option includes installing new poles, though that and other variations could carry a total cost of up to $75,000 for equipment and installation.
Despite some enthusiasm, concerns emerged regarding logistics, structural stability, and community interest. City Councilor Randy Filiault noted the need for more input from downtown businesses and event organizers before moving forward. He also floated the idea of fundraising as a way to support the project. Ultimately, the committee voted to place the matter on more time, allowing city staff to gather additional feedback and refine the proposal.
To aid in this process, the city launched a survey asking residents and visitors how effective they believe a Main Street banner would be in raising awareness of downtown happenings.
The survey, which closes Wednesday, May 21, is part of Keene’s ongoing partnership with FlashVote, a civic engagement platform introduced in 2023. The tool is designed to quickly gather input from residents on local issues.
Rebecca Landry, Keene’s deputy city manager, said when the program launched that it provides a scientific and inclusive approach to community engagement, especially for residents who may not be able to attend public meetings.
Residents can sign up to participate at flashvote.com/keenenh, by calling 775-235-2240, or by responding to a survey text message if invited. Surveys take less than a minute to complete, and all personal information is kept anonymous. Participants can choose to receive surveys via email, text, or phone call and will have 48 hours to respond. Once each survey closes, respondents automatically receive a summary of the results and can see how their views compare to others.
