KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Sarah Downing, a Social Studies teacher at Keene High School, has been named the 2025 Outstanding Educator by the Keene High School Alumni Fund, Inc.

“In 1997, a committee of the Keene High School Class of 1950 met to come up with a special or unique presentation to KHS for the year 2000 in recognition of the 50th anniversary of their graduation,” the KHS Alumni Fund wrote in a press release issued June 5. “These classmates wanted something that would be lasting and remembered in years to come.”

“Through much discussion and considerable input solicited from the entire class the idea emerged of honoring outstanding educators, those individuals currently in the field of education who are impacting the youth of the Keene community by setting high standards of excellence.”

“The KHS Alumni Fund, Inc. was founded in May 1998 for the following purpose: To annually recognize with substantial monetary awards one or more outstanding teacher or staff member at Keene High School. To raise and invest a capital fund from which the awards can be made.”

“Each recipient receives an engraved crystal bowl and a financial award.”

Among the comments submitted during this year’s nomination process were numerous tributes to Downing’s influence and care:

“Mrs. Downing isn’t just worried about achievements within her classroom; she cares about who we are as people not just students. She always makes sure to cheer on my accomplishments, whether it’s in my classes, clubs, sports or social life.”

“This teacher has been a huge light shining in my high school experience so far. I’ve treasured her dedication to teaching, her enthusiasm in everything she does, her knowledge of her subject, and her overall personality. She has motivated me to work hard, try my best, communicate clearly, state my opinions, speak freely, and so much more. This educator stands out in the school community and impacts many people every day.”

“She taught me how to be a better person and have more patience and taught me helpful tips/tools to use to be better prepared in the future. She also cares so much about her students and tries to get everyone involved in class discussions or activities and treats everyone equally.”

“This educator has created a safe space in her classroom. She is always very kind and understanding towards her students’ struggles and issues. She manages to create an environment where teaching is prioritized, while also expressing a deep care towards her students.”
