KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The excitement is building in Keene as the city prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the beloved film, “Jumanji,” this weekend, and two of the event’s key organizers joined Dan Mitchell Monday morning on WKBK Radio to talk all things jungle, movie magic, and Main Street memories.
Cathy Bergstrom, one of the co-organizers behind the weekend-long celebration, and Tim Pipp, owner of Bee’s Tees in Keene and designer of the official Jumanji event merchandise, appeared as guests on Good Morning with Dan Mitchell Monday to preview what’s in store for this Friday, June 20, through Sunday, June 22.
Bergstrom told Mitchell how the celebration planning has brought out so many personal stories and truly been a community effort that has involved local businesses, the Historical Society of Cheshire County and residents involved in the original filming.
Bergstrom, who has spearheaded the effort alongside organizer Susan MacNeil and a team of volunteers, highlighted the premiere of “Stories from the Set” at the Colonial Theatre on Friday. The short film compiles interviews with Keene-area extras, makeup artists, and behind-the-scenes crew who helped bring the 1995 movie to life.
Pipp, whose downtown business has been bustling with Jumanji-themed orders, added he’s had customers sharing their own memories of seeing the film’s star, Robin Williams, downtown or being part of the filming.
Both guests shared their excitement for Saturday’s full slate of events, including the whimsical Rhino Rumble road race, where participants must run in inflatable animal costumes, a downtown parade, a pet cuddle event with the Monadnock Humane Society, and a scavenger hunt.
There will also be a replica Jumanji board game auction being unveiled at the Colonial Theatre and a mini-exhibit at the Historical Society of Cheshire County Saturday morning featuring movie props and vintage photos of downtown businesses from the time of filming.
The celebration will conclude with a Sunday mural unveiling on the corner of Main and Cypress Streets. The tribute, which includes a mental health awareness component, honors the film’s late star Robin Williams.
Organizers still need parade participants and drummers.
