WINCHESTER, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The Winchester National Bank building has joined the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places, becoming the only property in Cheshire County to make this year’s list.

Constructed in 1847 in the heart of the village center, the Greek Revival–style landmark once set the tone for local architecture, influencing designs such as the front entry of the 1912 Winchester Memorial Church nearby. Its historical significance goes beyond bricks and mortar—two pioneering women, Jane Grace Alexander and Lucy Jennings, served as bank directors in the early 1900s.

Winchester National Bank

Alexander, the first woman banker in New Hampshire and the first female bank treasurer elected in the state, worked at Winchester’s national bank for 52 years before retiring.

The bank is one of eight properties across seven counties recognized this year by the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources for their unique historical or cultural value. Listing in the State Register carries no restrictions for property owners but highlights the site’s contribution to New Hampshire’s heritage.
