KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Operations at Keene’s transfer station were disrupted Wednesday afternoon when a load of trash ignited inside the facility, prompting a quick response from firefighters.
The fire was reported just after 12:45 p.m., according to Southwestern N.H. District Fire Mutual Aid. Staff on site spotted the blaze after a customer unloading waste noticed smoke and alerted workers. The flames were knocked down quickly, and no injuries were reported.
The facility is expected to resume service in some capacity by Thursday.
This week’s fire comes only months after the station suffered significant damage in a separate incident at the end of May. That earlier blaze destroyed equipment, disrupted operations, and led to an estimated $400,000 in losses. City officials have said lithium-ion batteries and other hazardous materials disposed of improperly are a likely cause of such incidents.
