RINDGE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A collision on Route 119 Wednesday afternoon has claimed the life of a local woman and left another driver hospitalized, according to authorities.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Route 119 near Wellington Road at about 2:45 p.m. on Nov. 19 for a report of a two-vehicle crash. Responders arrived to find a 2021 Jeep Gladiator overturned in the roadway and a 2018 Toyota RAV4 down an embankment.

Police said the Jeep was driven by Maria Lourdes Gray, 71, of Rindge, who had entered Route 119 from Converseville Road when her vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a westbound Toyota. The Toyota was operated by Deborah Melanson, 77, of Fitchburg, MA.

Gray was found unresponsive when first responders reached her and required extrication from the wrecked Jeep. Both women were flown by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. Gray died from her injuries Wednesday evening. Melanson remains hospitalized, but her condition has been upgraded to stable, police said.

A dog traveling in Gray’s vehicle survived and has been turned over to an emergency contact.

Both vehicles were destroyed in the crash and later towed to a Jaffrey repair facility. Officials closed Route 119 to through-traffic for nearly two hours while crews worked at the scene.

Personnel from multiple agencies assisted Rindge police and fire crews, including Jaffrey Police, the Cheshire County Sheriff’s Department, Jaffrey Fire and Rescue, Jaffrey Rindge Memorial Ambulance, Winchendon Fire and Rescue, Ashby Fire, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

The Rindge Police Department continues to investigate the crash and said no further details will be released until that work is complete.
