KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A 28-year-old Massachusetts woman was rescued from Mount Monadnock Saturday after a lower-leg injury left her unable to make the descent on her own.

Sara Grube of Somerville, Massachusetts, was hiking up the White Dot Trail at Monadnock State Park when she was injured. Her companion contacted the park’s Mountain Patrol Rangers at about 12:25 p.m. to report that Grube needed assistance.

Rangers reached Grube around 1:03 p.m. above the Upper Junction and began treating her injury. They initially attempted to help her descend under her own power, hoping to avoid a difficult carry-out from the mountain.

That effort was unsuccessful, and officials determined a litter evacuation was necessary.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers responded and called in additional rescuers from the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team and fire departments in Jaffrey, Peterborough, Troy and Marlborough.

Grube was placed in a litter by Mountain Patrol Rangers and carried down a challenging section of trail using a route that included the White Dot, Paradise Valley, Purgatory and Side Foot trails.

Rescuers reached the Old Toll Road at about 8 p.m. after carrying Grube for just under a mile over what officials described as extremely difficult terrain.

Grube was transferred to a Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance and taken to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene for treatment.
