CONCORD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) With hunting seasons underway across New Hampshire, state wildlife officials are reminding people heading into the woods to wear fluorescent orange clothing to help prevent accidents.
A bright orange hat, vest or jacket can make hikers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts easier to spot among the fall foliage, reducing the risk of someone being mistaken for a game animal.
Josh Mackay, who coordinates the Hunter Education Program for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, said wearing blaze orange has been shown to reduce hunting-related incidents nationwide.
Mackay also emphasized two essential firearm safety practices for hunters: keeping control of a gun’s muzzle at all times and positively identifying a target — including what lies beyond it — before taking a shot.
New Hampshire has maintained a strong hunter safety record, which the department attributes in large part to its Hunter Education programs. Hunter education became mandatory for all hunters in the state beginning in the 1970s.
Officials encourage anyone spending time outdoors this autumn to take precautions, even if they are not hunting. Hikers should wear bright orange clothing and remain on established trails.
