KEENE, NH – Tuesday was Municipal Primary election day in the City of Keene, and a small percentage of voters turned out at the polls.

According to official results from the City Clerk’s office, overall, 6% of voters cast their ballots Tuesday, a small majority of which was in Ward 3, which had the only contested race on the ballot.

There were four candidates for one open seat for Ward 3 City Councilor: Incumbent Bryan Lake, Michael K. Winograd, John Schmitt, and Steve E. Ringland. Only two could advance to the general ballot next month, and that was Lake with 130 votes and Winograd with 28.

All eight candidates who filed for At-Large councilor will appear on the ballot next month, that includes incumbents Randy Filiault, Bettina Chadbourne, Kate Bosley, and Michael Remy. Voters threw their support behind a majority of the incumbents. Councilors Filiault, Chadbourne, and Bosely lead with 503, 494, and 476 votes respectively. Terry M. Clarke, a former city councilor and current Cheshire County Commissioner earned 395 votes during the primary, beating Remy who earned 375.

One write-in candidate will appear on the ballot for At-Large councilor as well, and that’s local business owner Ted McGreer. He earned 11 write-ins, one more than the 10 needed to move on to the general election. David Richards earned six write in votes and will not appear on the ballot next month.

Mayor George Hansel announced in the Spring that he would not be seeking reelection to a third term as Mayor. Two candidates stepped forward: former State Senator Jay Kahn, and citizen Bradford Hutchinson. Kahn earned an overwhelming number of primary votes with 773, Hutchinson finished the day with 72.
