KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The City of Keene has been named a “Housing Champion” by the New Hampshire Department of Business and Economic Affairs (BEA), acknowledging the city’s leadership in expanding housing opportunities for residents of all income levels.
This recognition positions Keene among 18 communities statewide that have demonstrated exceptional efforts in addressing housing needs.
Keene’s proactive initiatives have earned high praise, particularly its innovative zoning reforms, infrastructure investments, and commitment to educating local stakeholders, the release said. Notable achievements include the adoption of a Cottage Court Overlay District to encourage small housing developments and expanded options for accessory dwelling units.
Infrastructure upgrades, such as the downtown improvement project, have also played a pivotal role. These enhancements aim to ensure reliable water, sewer, and transportation systems, making the city more accommodating to housing development.
Additionally, Keene has prioritized training for real estate professionals, builders, and community leaders, ensuring they are well-versed in the city’s updated building codes and zoning regulations.
Mayor Jay Kahn highlighted the importance of these efforts, stating, “This designation reflects the City Council’s commitment to removing obstacles to affordable and accessible housing, which is critical for our local economy’s growth.”
The Housing Champions program celebrates municipalities that embrace innovative strategies to address housing shortages while promoting economic and community well-being. With this recognition, Keene becomes eligible for upcoming state grant opportunities, set to launch in January 2025.
