KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Keene Middle School is facing ongoing heating problems that have left some classrooms significantly colder than intended during a recent cold snap.

Superintendent Robert Malay assured the community that efforts are underway to resolve the issue, with the goal of maintaining classroom temperatures between 68 and 70 degrees.

During a Tuesday evening meeting, Malay informed the Keene Board of Education that building and grounds staff are working diligently to address the problem. Initial investigations revealed blockages in some heating pumps, but even after cleaning, issues persisted, indicating a potential electrical fault.

Two hot water pumps have been restarted, and staff are checking blocked radiant panels. Additionally, an outside contractor is on standby to assist with identifying the root cause of the problem.

Principal Mike Smith notified families via email on Tuesday morning that the heating issues are confined to certain areas of the building, including some classrooms where temperatures are 5 to 10 degrees lower than desired. Some spaces have been reported to be as cold as 59 or 60 degrees.

Smith’s earlier communication on Jan. 9 indicated that the heating issues began at the start of the month. The situation has led to concerns among parents, many of whom have discussed the matter in local Facebook groups, with some suggesting students bring blankets and extra layers to school.

Malay reassured the community that electricians are working on-site to address the electrical issues. He praised the efforts of the staff and emphasized that they are doing everything possible to resolve the heating problems quickly.

“Buildings and Grounds is working hard and has developed a plan, but addressing the heating needs of each classroom that requires it will take time,” Smith wrote in his update. He advised families to ensure students dress warmly until the issue is fully resolved.

As of Tuesday morning, the lowest temperature recorded in some classrooms was 59 degrees, and further updates will be provided to keep families informed.
