PETERBOROUGH, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A chimney fire broke out at a residence early Sunday morning.
Peterborough Fire & Rescue was dispatched to 382 Sand Hill Road at about 2:15 a.m. after an automatic fire alarm.
Firefighters arrived on scene just before 2:30 a.m. and found the fire actively spreading from the chimney area of a woodstove into the kitchen wall. With the fire intensifying, a second alarm was called to bring additional firefighting resources to the scene.
Fire crews brought the fire under control within 90 minutes, but remained for an additional two hours to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and perform cleanup operations. The Peterborough Fire Department received assistance from multiple neighboring towns, including Antrim, Francestown, Jaffrey, Greenfield, Hancock, Milford, and from Southwestern New Hampshire Mutual Aid. Backup crews from Bennington, Keene, and Temple covered the Peterborough station during the incident.
Fire officials have labeled the fire accidental, tracing its origin to the area around the metal chimney connected to the woodstove. Significant fire damage was reported around the stove and stovepipe area.
Following the fire, Peterborough Fire & Rescue reminded residents to ensure that smoke detectors are functioning and that wood-burning appliances are regularly inspected and cleaned to prevent similar incidents.
