KEENE, NH – The man at the center of an Amber Alert issued in New Hampshire on Friday has been charged with second degree murder in the death of the children’s mother.
An Amber Alert was issued early Friday morning at the request of the Berlin, New Hampshire Police Department for Elowyn Duren, 4, and Vaelyn Duren, 1, who were believed to be with their father Dustin Mark Duren, 37, who was believed to be armed and dangerous, in a white 2017 Subaru Impreza.
The alert was issued after the girls’ mother, Caitlyn Naffziger, 31, was found dead in an apartment on Main Street in Berlin Thursday night.
The Keene Police Department received a tip late Friday morning that the vehicle was located in the Applebee’s parking lot on Key Road. KPD and New Hampshire State police responded and took Dustin into custody. The two girls were evaluated by Keene fire/EMS and were uninjured.
During a press conference in Keene Friday evening Assistant Attorney General Bethany Durand said the children are currently in the care of the Division of Children Youth and Families of the New Hampshire Health and Human Services Department.
Durand also announced that Dustin has been charged with second degree murder in Naffziger’s death. An autopsy determined she died of a single gunshot wound to the head. Further details could not be released as the investigation is ongoing, but Durand did say the Dustin was in a relationship with Naffziger and they were co-parenting the two girls.
Dustin is scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon.
