KEENE, NH – Fire officials say a cigarette was likely the cause of a blaze that destroyed a home in Swanzey Friday morning.

According to a Facebook post by the Swanzey Fire Department, Swanzey Police located the fire at 95 Winch Hill Road around 2:20 Friday morning, reporting that the home was fully engulfed. By the time fire officials arrived on scene, the home had burned down to its foundation.

The home was thought to be vacant at the time, but one person was located at the scene and transported to Cheshire Medical Center with minor burns.

Initially, Fire Chief Bill Gould said the blaze was considered suspicious and the cause remained under investigation. In a phone call with WKBK around 10:30 Friday morning, Gould said the person found on scene was the resident, who said he was smoking in bed, and the bed ignited.

Gould said that will likely be identified as the official cause of the blaze.
