KEENE, NH – Heavy rain storms moved across the Monadnock Region Sunday afternoon and into the evening, leaving a trail of destruction behind.
The storms caused flooding and washout conditions across the region and into Vermont prompting numerous road and other closures.
In an update Wednesday afternoon Swanzey Town Administrator Michael Branley said Winch Hill, Pebble Hill, Corliss and Rabbit Hollow Roads, and a portion of Holbrook Avenue were severely damaged and were all impassable at one point or another during the storms.
The town’s Department of Public Works has been out repairing damage since the storms moved out of the region, and those roads have since been made passable for residents and emergency vehicles only. More work is necessary to bring the roads back to their normal conditions.
Christian Hill, Dunn Hill, Honey Hill, part of Atkinson Hill Road, and a section of East Shore Road are still impassable and closed to all traffic.
Talbot Hill Road, Foxglove Lane, Eaton Road, and Partridgeberry Lane are among several other roads that sustained damage, but are open to regular traffic.
Sections of Route 32 and Swanzey Lake Road sustained damage as well, but an assessment of those will come from the state.
The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but Branley says the current estimate is in the $1 to $2 million range.
Due to the extent of the damage in the town with more rain in the forecast this weekend, the Swanzey Old Home Day committee has decided to postpone this year’s Old Home Day event. More information will be released at a later date.
