KEENE, NH – Thousands of Eversource customers are still without power Monday morning following the snow and ice storm that slammed the Monadnock Region over the weekend.
A few inches of snow accumulated then iced over with freezing rain on top of that, weighing down trees and power lines, prompting power outages and road closures all over the state.
In an update Monday morning William Hinkle, a spokesman for Eversource said statewide crews have restored power to more than 100,000 customers, and the most customers should have their lights back on late tonight.
“About half of the customers that are currently without power have crews either on the way or already on scene, and we expect to substantially complete our restoration by 11:30 pm tonight, but there will still be a handful of outages that will go into tomorrow,” Hinkle said.
Keene made it out relatively unscathed, but several surrounding towns in the region got walloped. As of 11:30 Monday morning only about 16 people were without power in Keene, places like Jaffrey, Antrim, Peterborough, Dublin, Fitzwilliam, Rindge, Richmond, Sullivan, Temple, Bennington, Francestown, and Hancock are all reporting 100+ outages.
Along with the reports of downed power lines and road closures came quite a few accidents as the roads got icy. Two people were taken to the hospital after their car collided with a snowplow truck in Alstead, and in Marlborough three people were evaluated after ice reportedly flew off another vehicle and hit their windshield.
New Hampshire State Law requires drivers to clear all ice and snow off of your vehicle, including the roof, before you hit the road.
