KEENE, NH – Crowds gathered at the Cheshire Railroad Depot in Troy Thursday as a vintage train car arrived that will soon be turned into a museum.
After more than a year of planning, the 90-passenger train car was transported from North Walpole to Troy Thursday where it will live at the fully restored train depot.
In December of 2022, Kim Chaffee of the Troy Historical Society and Cheshire Railroad Depot told WKBK the 118,000-pound train is in great condition for its age on the outside, but it needed a little work on the inside.
“When we say restored, it is not fully restored, we’re talking, clean her up,” Chaffee said. “She’s earned all of those dents and dings and things that are on the outside, and then the inside does need some work, some kids got in there, but for the most part … she’s in great condition.”
Chaffee said people today who come to the Troy depot remember riding the rails.
“Every time we open the depot somebody walks in and the first two words out of their mouth is ‘I remember’,” Chaffee said. “I remember riding the rails, I remember sending blueberries from Troy to Boston …. I remember riding the train into Keene and watching a movie and then coming back. There’s all these great stories.”
The historical society has been working to raise donations for the project, and now the group is seeking volunteers to help with the restoration. Anyone interested can contact Chaffee at crrdepot@gmail.com.
