KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – Antioch University has halted its plans to build a new facility in downtown Keene, citing unexpectedly high construction costs.

The university had intended to construct a new building at the site of two former Keene State College dormitories, Monadnock and Randall, which were demolished earlier this year.

William Groves, chancellor of Antioch University, said in a news release the cost of the project significantly surpassed initial estimates due to increased prices for construction materials, labor, and financing. He explained that the expenses have more than doubled over the past few years. As a result, the university is now considering alternative options, including the potential to use existing spaces within the city or on Keene State’s campus.

Keene State College President Melinda Treadwell expressed continued support for the collaboration between the two institutions, highlighting the potential academic benefits for both students and the community, the release said. Treadwell emphasized the “synergies” between the schools, which she believes could create a stronger educational ecosystem in the area.

For now, the vacant lot on Winchester Street will be used for other purposes while plans are being reconsidered. Keene State already shares its facilities with River Valley Community College’s Keene campus, allowing students access to classrooms, labs, and other resources.

Antioch University sold its previous campus on Avon Street to Monadnock Family Services in 2022 but still leases space at that location as well as other sites around Keene. The university’s New England campus offers a variety of advanced degree programs, including counseling, psychology, education, and environmental studies.

Treadwell, a former CEO of Antioch, expressed her optimism about the potential co-location, saying it would provide social and academic opportunities for students while being a smart financial move for both institutions.
