KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella has disclosed the identities of the five state police officers who discharged their firearms during the August 12 standoff on West Street in Keene that ended with the death of 57-year-old David Ward.

The officers are:

Sergeant Nicholas Levesque, 13 years with the New Hampshire State Police (NHSP)

Sergeant Noah Sanctuary, 14 years with NHSP

Sergeant Aramus Caraballo, 10 years with NHSP

Trooper Matthew Dushame, 6 years with NHSP

Trooper Jacob Hunt, 3 years with NHSP

The Attorney General’s office said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and a full report on whether the officers’ use of deadly force was justified is expected once the review is complete. No further updates are anticipated until that report is released.

The fatal shooting occurred after police attempted to serve a warrant on West Street around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, August 12. Officers said the warrant service led to a standoff involving a man armed inside a vehicle parked near TD Bank. A woman inside the vehicle exited safely around 5:30 p.m., but the man refused to surrender, prompting a multi-hour police response.

During the standoff, West Street and Gilbo Avenue were closed to traffic, and additional law enforcement personnel, including negotiators and a K-9 unit, were deployed. Keene Police positioned an armored vehicle directly in front of the sedan, with officers communicating with the man inside, urging him to surrender.

At approximately 8 p.m., shots were fired, and the man was struck by gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released details about the warrant that led to the confrontation or the specific events immediately preceding the gunfire. Investigators continue to gather evidence as part of the state’s ongoing review of the use of deadly force.
