KEENE, N.H. — A fire that broke out Friday evening in the basement of a Keene home caused significant damage but no injuries, according to the Keene Fire Department.
Fire crews were called to 78 Dale Drive just after 5 p.m. on June 20 for reports of smoke coming from a single-family ranch-style residence. According to a department press release issued Monday, smoke was visible from the structure when firefighters arrived just four minutes later.
The fire, which originated in the basement, was traced to a malfunctioning plug strip connected to an aquarium. Though the flames were largely contained to that area, the home suffered extensive smoke and water damage. Fire officials estimate the total property loss to be around $55,000, with the possibility of additional losses once the contents of the home are fully assessed.
The incident occurred while several mutual aid companies were already in the city to cover calls during funeral services for retired Keene Fire Lt. Aaron Cooper. Those units—including Lebanon Engine 2, Brattleboro Ladder 1, and multiple ambulances from Tilton-Northfield, Dover, and Concord—acted as Keene crews during the call.
Twenty-six Keene personnel responded, supported by additional help from Cheshire County EMS and other mutual aid partners from Chesterfield, Marlborough, Walpole, and Eversource. Firefighters located and safely removed a dog from the home during their search; the pet did not require medical attention.
The fire was brought under control by 5:32 p.m., and all units cleared the scene by 8:41 p.m.
In a statement, the department praised the coordination between responding agencies, especially given the high volume of emergency calls that day. “Multiple different companies, all from different cities, were able to work together to mitigate multiple emergencies as if they had done it together every day,” the release read.
