WESTMORELAND, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A man from Vermont who went missing while canoeing on the Connecticut River Saturday night was found dead Sunday afternoon near Ferry Road in Westmoreland, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.
Officials said the man was last seen around 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, after leaving from the Putney, Vt., side of the river in his canoe. When friends were unable to reach him, they searched the area and discovered the canoe overturned the next morning.
Emergency crews from several agencies — including Westmoreland, Walpole, Spofford and Chesterfield fire and rescue departments, the Water Rescue Task Force, Walpole Police and Vermont State Police — joined New Hampshire Conservation Officers in a coordinated search.
Divers from the Water Rescue Task Force located the missing man’s body shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, not far from where the canoe was found.
The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities reminded boaters to wear personal flotation devices as colder weather sets in and river temperatures drop. Safety information for boaters is available at wildlife.nh.gov and nhsp.dos.nh.gov.
