BRATTLEBORO, VT (MyKeeneNow) A Brattleboro man was taken into custody Tuesday night after police responding to a medical emergency at a local hotel uncovered evidence of a possible sexual assault, authorities said.
According to a news release from the the Brattleboro Police Department, officers and Brattleboro Fire personnel were called to the Travelodge on Putney Road shortly before 7 p.m. on Jan. 6 for a report of an unconscious woman. While assisting at the scene, officers gathered information that raised concerns a sexual assault may have occurred.
A detective was summoned to investigate, and the inquiry led to the arrest of 52-year-old Bankim Aghera of Brattleboro. Police said Aghera was charged with sexual assault and aggravated assault.
The woman was transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, where she continued to receive treatment as of Wednesday, police said.
Aghera was held on bail and scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, Jan. 7. Police emphasized that all individuals arrested are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
