KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Cheshire County Sheriff Eli Rivera will travel to Krakow, Poland, next month as part of an international delegation of more than 50 law enforcement officers attending the 2025 Operationalizing Never Again event.
The program, which focuses on the role of law enforcement during the Holocaust, brings together officers from around the world to examine historical lessons and their relevance to modern policing, according to a news release.
Rivera, who also serves as president of the Small and Rural Law Enforcement Executives Association (SRLEEA), has been preparing for the trip through a series of webinars hosted by the University of Virginia. The training covers contemporary leadership issues and explores how law enforcement operated in Nazi Germany, particularly in relation to deportations and mass executions.
While in Poland, Rivera will take part in guided tours of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and other historical sites, the release said. He will also join group discussions with officials from various countries to reflect on law enforcement’s ethical responsibilities. A key moment of the trip will be the March of the Living, a solemn walk from Auschwitz to Birkenau honoring Holocaust victims, which will include Holocaust survivors and thousands of participants.
Rivera called the opportunity “a once-in-a-lifetime experience” and has been meeting with local leaders to better understand the Holocaust’s regional impact. Upon his return, he plans to share his insights through a community presentation.
The program is supported by the Rutgers Miller Center on Policing and Community Resilience and the University of Virginia’s Center for Public Safety and Justice.
