KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Comedian Andrew Della Volpe stopped by Good Morning with Dan Mitchell on Wednesday to preview his upcoming performance later this month at the showroom at the The Colonial Theatre.
Della Volpe will headline a stand-up show at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 28, in the venue’s intimate Showroom space, bringing a comedy set largely inspired by his own life—including material about recently getting married.
The Boston-based comic is familiar with Keene audiences. He previously performed in the Showroom while opening for well-known New England comedians, including Dunn and Marley, and said he enjoys performing throughout the region.
“I love performing in New England,” Della Volpe said.
From internship to stand-up
Della Volpe, who grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, said his path into comedy began during a college internship with the production company of actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen.
During the internship, he observed writers developing scripts and comedic ideas, which inspired him to pursue comedy himself.
“It was like four years of college in one month,” he said. “Watching funny people hash out ideas really got the gears turning that this was something I wanted to do.”
Encouraged by a producer during a job interview, he eventually tried stand-up at an open mic while still in college. After receiving laughs—and encouragement from audience members he didn’t know—he decided to keep pursuing it.
Performing almost every night
Now 30, Della Volpe performs regularly in Boston’s comedy scene and tours with established comedians such as Juston McKinney, Dunn and Marley. He said he is on stage nearly every night, testing new material and building toward more headlining shows.
His style is largely autobiographical, with jokes woven into stories about family life, relationships and his experiences growing up.
“It’s very personal,” he said. “I can’t write a joke unless it happened to me first.”
The result, he said, is a set that blends storytelling with punchlines while remaining relatively clean, though not completely free of the occasional swear word.
Comedy in the driveway
Like many performers, Della Volpe had to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic when live shows were shut down. To keep performing, he began offering socially distanced comedy shows in people’s driveways.
He emailed people in his hometown offering to perform short sets outside for small groups. The idea quickly caught on, and after a local television reporter covered the story, the shows multiplied.
Over the course of that summer, he performed roughly 75 driveway shows.
“People were so locked up and hungry for interaction,” he said. “They couldn’t have been nicer.”
Looking ahead to Keene
For his March 28 performance in Keene, Della Volpe said the show will include a full-length set featuring material about marriage, family and everyday life. The night will also include opening comedians before his headlining act.
He encouraged fans to follow his work online, where he posts short clips and updates from his performances.
Tickets for the show are available through The Colonial Theatre’s website.
