KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – The Keene School District fell victim to a cyber-attack recently resulting in the theft of approximately $2.1 million. The breach was uncovered by the School Administrative Unit 29 business office in collaboration with its banking partners, revealing a series of fraudulent electronic bank transfers.
Upon discovering the theft Wednesday, the district swiftly acted to prevent further unauthorized transactions, according to a news release from the school district. They immediately reported the incident to their bank, insurance provider, and both local and federal law enforcement agencies. The district’s bank has assured them that it expects to recover $1.5 million in the coming days, which had been transferred through erroneous Automated Clearing House (ACH) debits. Efforts are ongoing to retrieve the remaining $600,000.
The attack came to light thanks to anti-fraud measures recently implemented by the business office, particularly a new ACH monitoring system that detected the unauthorized transactions. Although there is currently no evidence that personal information was compromised, the district’s insurance provider will conduct a thorough on-site investigation to ensure the integrity of all sensitive data.
Keene School District officials continue to work closely with law enforcement to fully investigate the crime.
