KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) New Hampshire Department of Motor Vehicles Director John Marasco joined “Good Morning with Dan Mitchell” on WKBK Wednesday morning to discuss sweeping updates at the state DMV — including a new appointment-based service system and the upcoming end of mandatory vehicle inspections.

Marasco, who has served as DMV director for about three and a half years, said the department launched the appointment-only model on November 3, calling it “a home run.” The change, he said, has cut average customer wait times to just eight minutes — down from as long as two or three hours at busy locations such as Concord, Manchester, Nashua and Keene.

“At first people heard ‘appointments’ and thought it would make things harder,” Marasco said. “Actually, it’s just the opposite. Customers can choose their location, date and time, and most are in and out in eight minutes or less.”

The DMV handled more than 425,000 in-person transactions last year, according to Marasco, and staff have worked to balance efficiency with convenience. Customers can now schedule appointments online at dmv.nh.gov or by calling 227-4000, and same-day slots are often available at many of the DMV’s 14 locations statewide.

Marasco said the system not only saves time for residents but improves working conditions for DMV employees, who previously stayed late to handle long lines. “We work for you,” he said. “Our team comes to work every day with their A-game, and we want to be the best DMV in the country.”

During the live call-in segment, listeners asked about several other issues — including the end of the state’s vehicle inspection program, which will officially sunset January 31, 2026.

“As of February 1, state inspection requirements are no longer in effect here in New Hampshire,” Marasco confirmed. “That includes both safety and emissions testing.”

He also addressed questions about commercial driver’s license testing and temporary plates, emphasizing that while the DMV encourages appointments, staff will accommodate urgent needs.

“Even if you don’t have an appointment, if something is urgent — like a temporary plate or expiring license — our team will get it done for you,” he said.
