RINDGE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A Winchendon, MA, man died Wednesday night after his car collided head-on with another vehicle on Route 119 in Rindge, authorities said.
The crash happened around 9:15 p.m. near 422 Route 119, when a westbound Ford Fiesta attempted to turn onto Old Ashburnham Road and drove into the path of an eastbound Jeep Compass, according to a news release. The two vehicles struck each other and rolled for more than 100 feet before stopping along the eastbound shoulder, with the Jeep landing on its side atop the Fiesta.
The driver of the Fiesta, 52-year-old Richard Pezzolesi, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. Emergency crews said a passerby helped officers put out a fire that broke out in his vehicle before rescue workers arrived.
The driver of the Jeep, Robert Adams, 24, of Ashburnham, MA, managed to get out of his SUV on his own. He was treated at the scene for serious but non-life-threatening injuries and taken by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., after weather conditions prevented a medical helicopter from flying.
A third vehicle, a Honda Accord driven by James Bertram, 47, of Rindge, struck the debris field before first responders arrived but was not injured. Police said a fourth vehicle also drove through the wreckage without stopping, and they are asking that driver to come forward.
Both heavily damaged vehicles were removed from the scene by Gauthier’s Auto Services of Jaffrey. Route 119 was shut down for about four hours while police investigated and the crash site was cleared.
Multiple agencies assisted Rindge Police, Fire, and Rescue at the scene, including Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance, Winchendon Ambulance, Jaffrey Fire, Ashburnham Police, the New Hampshire DOT, and representatives from the state Medical Examiner’s Office and Cournoyer’s Family Funeral Home.
The accident remains under investigation. Witnesses are asked to contact Officer Sam Kelley or Chief Rachel Malynowski at the Rindge Police Department.
