FITZWILLIAM, N.H. (MyKeeneNow)— The Fitzwilliam Fire Department is raising funds to honor the life and service of Edwin O. “Ed” Mattson Jr., a longtime firefighter who died Dec. 12 at the age of 82.
Mattson joined the department in 1958 at just 16 years old and went on to serve the town for 67 consecutive years, becoming one of the department’s longest-serving members.
According to the department, Mattson was known not only for responding to emergencies, but also for his strong commitment to fire prevention and public education. He regularly worked with children and community members to promote fire safety and reduce the risk of preventable fires.
“He loved teaching wide-eyed schoolkids about fire safety, handing out Smokey Bear stickers, and gently reminding hunters and campers to be careful with every spark.,” the department said.
In his memory, the fire department plans to install a double-sided Smokey Bear Fire Danger Rating sign in front of the fire station. Department officials say the sign will serve as both a tribute to Mattson and a daily reminder of the importance of fire prevention.
“Smokey will raise or lower the danger level, just as Ed would have wanted, carrying his message of prevention to new generations: our children, our grandchildren, and visitors who never had the privilege of meeting him,” the department said. “This sign will be more than metal and wood. It will be Ed standing watch one more time-reminding us all to be careful, to look out for one another, and to live with the same quiet courage he showed every day of his life.”
The department is seeking to raise $3,800 to cover the cost of the sign, a commemorative plaque, and professional installation. Donations of any amount are being accepted to support the project and honor Mattson’s legacy of service to the Fitzwilliam community.
Checks should be made payable to The Danny Baker Fund, and mailed to P.O. Box 9, Fitzwilliam, NH 03447. The department asks that you write “Ed Mattson Memorial Sign” in the memo line. Donations can also be made through Venmo to @DannyBaker-Fund, with authorization code 2046
