PROVIDENCE, R.I. (MyKeeneNow) – Five members of Keene State College were recognized with Little East Conference weekly awards when the league office released the selections on Monday.
Three won for the second time already this season, and men’s and women’s cross country swept the league awards overall as fifth year Jake Velazquez was named the Runner of the Week for the second time this season, freshman Ben Tetu the Rookie of the Week for the second time, and first year Kallie Warner also the Rookie of the Week for the second time. Graduate student Maggie St. John was named the Runner of the Week, with the four Owls all finishing in the top 19 of their respective races on Saturday at the Ron Stonitsch Invitational in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Velazquez won the race (6K) on the men’s side in 18:56.2, finishing over 12 seconds faster than the second-place finisher in a 108-runner field, while Tetu was in 19th (and fifth among rookies that raced) in 20:44.3. Velazquez’s individual victory was his second in as many tries this season
On the women’s side, St. John, an NCAA qualifier last season, finished seventh in a 107-runner field in 19:37.1 while Warner was 18th in 20:09 in KSC’s second race of the year.
