MONADNOCK REGION, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Flooding, one of the most frequent and devastating natural hazards in the U.S., is set to impact parts of New Hampshire this week. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for Cheshire County and surrounding areas, effective from 1 p.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday. Residents are urged to prepare for potential flooding caused by heavy rain, snowmelt, and ice jams.

A soaking rain of 2 to 4 inches is possible and snowmelt will contribute to the runoff. Additionally there are concerns of shifting river ice in the northern parts of the Granite State. Rivers and streams could rise to significant levels. While cooler air moving in on Thursday may slow water runoff, river levels could remain elevated through the week

Flash flooding is also possible in some areas, adding urgency to the need for precautions.

According to ReadyNH.gov, you should avoid walking or driving through floodwaters. Just six inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet, while one foot can carry away a car.

Local authorities are reminding residents to stay informed by monitoring weather updates via the NWS, NOAA, and local broadcasters. The latest forecasts and alerts can also be accessed online at weather.gov.
