RINDGE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) As Franklin Pierce University prepares to celebrate its 60th commencement on May 10, the institution will recognize two distinguished individuals for their contributions to education, leadership, and community service.
The university will posthumously award an honorary degree to Frederick W. Pierce IV, a former chair of the Board of Trustees whose tenure was marked by dedicated leadership and a deep commitment to student success, according to a news release. Additionally, James McKim, a business strategist and advocate for organizational performance, will receive the Honorable Walter R. Peterson Citizen Leader Award, named after New Hampshire’s 72nd governor and Franklin Pierce’s second president.
Pierce, who passed away in June 2024, served on the university’s Board of Trustees for seven years, including four as chair, the release said. A leader in real estate investment and development, he was the president and CEO of Pierce Education Properties, a firm specializing in student housing. His strategic leadership played a crucial role in guiding Franklin Pierce University through pivotal moments, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the university’s presidential search in 2024. Colleagues remember him for his vision, generosity, and unwavering support for higher education.
McKim, a recognized expert in organizational strategy, has spent his career helping businesses and institutions enhance efficiency through the integration of people, technology, and processes. As managing partner at Organizational Ignition, he has advised organizations across multiple industries. He has also played key leadership roles in organizations such as Digital Equipment Corp, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and F.I.R.S.T. Beyond his professional work, McKim is a dedicated advocate for diversity and inclusion, serving in leadership positions with the NAACP and New Hampshire Public Broadcasting.
