KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Teagan Cairns, the 23-year-old Keene man seriously injured in a motorcycle crash on Route 101 earlier this month, as he faces what supporters describe as “a long, painful, and uncertain” recovery.
Cairns was involved in a motorcycle accident on the morning of July 7 and was airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The crash occurred at the Winchester Street roundabout, where, according to Keene police, both his motorcycle and a Mercedes sedan were exiting eastbound when they collided just before 10 a.m.
The GoFundMe states that Cairns, who was on his way to work at the time of the crash, sustained “massive internal bleeding, multiple broken bones, and significant head trauma,” and was placed on a ventilator as doctors worked to stabilize him. On July 8, he underwent an extensive surgery to repair fractures to his pelvis and femur, with additional surgeries anticipated.
By July 9, doctors determined he was strong enough to begin weaning off the ventilator, and as the campaign notes, “the doctors said he was very lucky to be alive.” Despite signs of progress, the extent of his injuries has left him “unable to walk and expected to be wheelchair-bound for at least the next eight weeks.” His recovery will require learning to walk again through intensive rehabilitation.
On July 15, Cairns underwent surgery to repair his left hand “in hopes of restoring its full use,” and in the coming days, the campaign says, he is expected to be transferred to an acute rehab facility for a few weeks of intense physical therapy before eventually transitioning home.
The fundraiser also highlights the role of his significant other, Shelby, who has “been by his side day and night,” taking time off from work, staying in hotels near the hospital, and making frequent trips between Keene and Lebanon to prepare for his return home. The family says the financial strain continues to grow, with no clear timeline for his return to work.
“All funds raised will go directly toward Teagan’s medical bills, rehabilitation, and living expenses as well as Shelby’s travel and lodging during this critical time,” the campaign states. “Any support you can give—whether financial, emotional, or through sharing this page—is deeply appreciated.”
Keene police say the crash remains under investigation by the department’s Collision Analysis Team. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Detective Lieutenant Steven Chidester at 357-9820.
