KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Keene area on Friday, July 25, warning that heat index values could reach 100 degrees between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. City officials are urging the public to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
According to city guidance released Wednesday, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and seek air-conditioned environments whenever possible.
The Keene Public Library at 60 Winter St. and the Keene Family YMCA will be open to the public during normal hours as designated cooling locations. In addition, municipal swimming pools will be available for public use.
Health risks associated with extreme heat include heat exhaustion and heat stroke, both of which can escalate quickly without intervention. Officials say those most at risk include older adults, young children, and individuals with underlying health conditions.
Authorities also issued a reminder that children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, where interior temperatures can reach lethal levels in minutes.
Key recommendations include:
-
Drink water regularly, even if not thirsty
-
Avoid sugary, alcoholic, or caffeinated drinks
-
Reschedule strenuous outdoor activity to early morning or evening
-
Check on vulnerable friends, relatives, and neighbors
