KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A brief stretch of summer-like heat is expected to move into the Monadnock Region this week, with temperatures in Keene forecast to climb into the low 90s Tuesday before cooler air arrives later in the week.

According to the National Weather Service, sunny skies Monday will help push temperatures to around 87 degrees, with mild overnight conditions continuing into Tuesday morning.

The hottest day of the week is expected Tuesday, when forecasters predict mostly sunny skies and highs near 92 degrees. Southwest winds could gust up to 20 miles per hour during the day, while nighttime temperatures are expected to remain warm, only dropping to around 69 degrees.

A chance of showers moves into the region Wednesday afternoon, though temperatures are still expected to reach the upper 80s before a major cooldown arrives. By Thursday, highs are forecast to fall into the mid-60s, with overnight lows dipping into the low 40s by Thursday night. Temperatures Friday are expected to remain seasonable, with highs near 68 degrees.

Health officials recommend residents take precautions during periods of hot weather, especially young children, older adults and people with chronic medical conditions.

Safety tips during hot weather include:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and family members who may not have air conditioning.
  • Use fans or air conditioning when possible and seek out cooling centers or air-conditioned public buildings if needed.

Officials also advise pet owners to make sure animals have access to shade and fresh water, and to avoid walking dogs on hot pavement that can burn their paws.
