STODDARD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) The Stoddard Congregational Church, an iconic landmark located at the base of Pitcher Mountain, has completed a $450,000 preservation project to stabilize and protect its 1836 structure. The initiative, supported by a $200,000 grant from the New Hampshire Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP), addressed critical structural issues and introduced modern improvements to ensure the building’s longevity.

Key components of the project included lifting the church to install a new concrete foundation with a stone façade, repairing first-floor timbers and supports, and implementing perimeter drainage to mitigate moisture damage. The effort represents the most substantial preservation work in the church’s history.

Funding for the project was achieved through a mix of the LCHIP grant and over $250,000 in donations and savings. LCHIP’s matching grant requirement challenged the small church community to engage in extensive fundraising and careful financial planning, underscoring the dedication of both the congregation and local supporters.

The preservation project also involved coordination with contractors specializing in excavation, concrete, stonework, and carpentry. Church members contributed significant volunteer labor to reduce costs and bring the ambitious effort to fruition.

As the last remaining church in Stoddard, the Congregational Church has been a community hub since the 1780s, with its current building serving as a center for religious and town events.
