MONADNOCK REGION, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) If the early sunsets are getting you down, the holiday light displays popping up across New Hampshire are ready to brighten the season. From neighborhood competitions in Keene and Swanzey to mega-displays that draw visitors from across New England, there’s no shortage of twinkle to explore this winter. Here’s your guide to the best local—and worth-the-drive—holiday lights for 2025.
Keene: Light Up the City Shines Again
Keene’s annual Light Up the City event returns this year, and organizers hope to surpass last year’s 36 entries. Residents have until Nov. 30 to register their homes, with maps available starting Dec. 5 both online and at the Keene Parks and Recreation Department.
The season officially kicks off Dec. 5 with a festive “first stop” at KPRD from 6–7 p.m., featuring hot cocoa, popcorn and plenty of holiday cheer. Self-guided tours run through Dec. 23, when voting ends. The top three most dazzling displays will receive their holiday surprise on Dec. 25.
This free, family-friendly event is perfect for a laid-back evening—grab a thermos, queue up the car playlist, and enjoy a slow drive past Keene’s brightest homes.
Swanzey: A Townwide Festival of Lights
Just down the road, the Swanzey Festival of Lights continues to grow year after year. Homeowners can register until Nov. 30, with maps ready by Dec. 5.
The community viewing period runs Dec. 5–26, with voting taking place Dec. 12–22 and winners announced Dec. 24. The top three vote-getters will earn gift cards to local restaurants—an extra reason to bring your decorating “A-game.”
Swanzey’s competition tends to feature everything from elegant displays to full-on winter wonderlands, making it a must-see on any holiday light tour through the region.
Winchester: Holiday Hoof at Draft Gratitude
For animal lovers—especially anyone smitten with horses—Winchester’s Holiday Hoof event at Draft Gratitude offers a heartwarming twist on traditional light displays. The organization transforms its barnyard into a glowing, drive-through wonderland, inviting visitors to enjoy the lights while supporting a meaningful cause.
Guests are asked to remain in their vehicles with parking lights on as they roll through the festive farm scene. Donations are accepted at the entrance; the suggested $18 per car covers the daily cost of care for one of the senior draft horses who call the sanctuary home.
Every dollar raised directly benefits these gentle giants, making Holiday Hoof both a charming outing and a truly feel-good experience. Visitors can find more information and updates on Draft Gratitude’s website and Facebook page.
