(MyKeeneNow) – As hunting season approaches, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is calling for volunteers to step up as hunter education instructors.
With the final training sessions for new instructors scheduled for mid-September, experienced hunters who want to share their knowledge of safe and responsible hunting practices should sign up.
The upcoming training consists of two parts: an online webinar on Sept. 18, followed by an in-person session in Holderness, N.H. on Sept. 22.
Since 1977, when hunter education became mandatory for first-time hunting license buyers, the program has played a crucial role in reducing hunting-related incidents. The widespread adoption of hunter orange clothing, coupled with education on ethical hunting practices, has made hunting one of the safest outdoor activities. However, maintaining this safety record requires a steady influx of passionate volunteers to meet the growing demand for classes.
Volunteer instructors are the backbone of hunter education in New Hampshire. These individuals are committed to promoting safe, ethical hunting, but the program is facing a decline in volunteer numbers at a time when more people are seeking to enroll in courses.
The Hunter Education program is funded by federal Wildlife Restoration Funds, a user-supported initiative that benefits both hunters and the environment.
