CONCORD, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) New Hampshire hunters will return to the woods September 1, when the state’s first fall hunting seasons begin with black bear and gray squirrel. That same day, the annual resident Canada goose season also opens, running through September 25.

Archery hunters will follow close behind, with turkey and white-tailed deer season beginning September 15. The most anticipated date for many hunters — the start of deer hunting — arrives later in the fall with the muzzleloader season opening November 1, followed by the regular firearms season on November 12.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department has released its full slate of 2025 hunting seasons, which also include snowshoe hare, ruffed grouse, moose (by permit only), and fall turkey. The state’s Hunting and Trapping Digest provides detailed regulations, including bag limits, check station information, and rules that vary by Wildlife Management Unit.

Hunters are also being reminded of several important precautions this year. Officials warn against the use of natural urine-based deer lures, which can spread chronic wasting disease — a fatal neurological illness that affects deer and moose. Synthetic alternatives are recommended. Fish and Game also urges hunters to wear blaze orange in the field and to avoid harvesting or handling animals that appear sick.

In addition to traditional licenses, apprentice licenses are available for those age 16 and older who want to try hunting under the supervision of a licensed adult. These can only be purchased at Fish and Game headquarters in Concord.

With more than a million acres of public land open to hunters, wildlife officials say the fall seasons remain an important New Hampshire tradition, offering both recreation and wildlife management.
