KEENE, NH – The National Transportation Safety Board has released their first report relating to a plane crash in Keene earlier this month.

The single-engine aircraft crashed into an apartment building on lower Main Street the evening of October 21st and sparked a third alarm blaze. All eight residents of the building made it out of the building uninjured, but were displaced by the crash and ensuing blaze.

The pilot and lone passenger of the plane, identified as Lawrence Marchiony, 41, of Baldwinville Massachusetts, and Marvin David Dezendorf, 60, of Townshend Vermont, died in the crash.

In the first report issued on Thursday, the NTSB said that a mechanic who witnessed the crash said that when the plane was airborne, he heard a momentary power reduction, followed by a power advance.

Another witness reported that the aircraft “never sounded smooth” on the runway. While another, about half a mile down the runway, reported the plane was only about 50 feet off the ground when it passed him, and he heard popping noises before the plane began to descend and the engine got louder.

The report also noted that the plane made a shallow climb after take off, and that Marchiony and Dezendorf did not make a distress call over the common traffic advisory frequency.

The NTSB’s final report which would outline a probable cause of the crash could take 18-24 months.
