MARLBOROUGH, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) An 80-year-old Jaffrey man died Wednesday morning after a two-vehicle collision on Route 12 in Marlborough that left both vehicles engulfed in flames.

New Hampshire State Police identified the deceased driver as Donald C. Garfield, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers responded to the crash near Webb Depot Road at approximately just before 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release. The vehicles involved were a 2019 Ram ProMaster van and a 2021 Nissan Rogue.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Nissan was traveling south when it crossed into the northbound lane, the release said. The northbound Ram van’s driver attempted to avoid a collision by swerving left. The Nissan’s driver also maneuvered to correct the vehicle’s path, but the two vehicles collided head-on.

Both vehicles caught fire following the crash. Officers from the Troy and Swanzey police departments were among the first to arrive and used fire extinguishers to combat the flames. Bystanders also helped by bringing additional extinguishers to the scene.

A good Samaritan assisted the driver of the Ram van, identified as Jose Manuel Camacho Quintana, 33, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, in getting out of the vehicle.

Emergency personnel from several area departments and agencies responded, including the Marlborough, Swanzey and Troy police departments; the Marlborough and Keene fire departments; Cheshire County EMS; the New Hampshire Department of Transportation; and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit.

Route 12 remained closed for approximately five and a half hours while investigators examined the crash scene and crews worked to clear the wreckage.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact State Police Trooper Paul Bergeron at 603-223-3879 or Paul.J.Bergeron@dos.nh.gov.
