KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Residents in Keene may notice some temporary changes in their water service beginning this weekend as the city kicks off its annual system maintenance.
The Keene Public Works Department plans to start flushing water mains overnight beginning Sunday, April 12, with crews working between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in an effort to limit disruptions. The work is expected to continue for three to four weeks.
Officials say the flushing process helps remove mineral buildup inside pipes while also ensuring that hydrants and valves remain in working order for emergencies such as fires or water main breaks.
During the first week, which is scheduled to run through the morning of Friday, April 17, crews will focus on a wide range of streets across the city, including neighborhoods off Main Street, Marlboro Street, Court Street and Washington Street, along with dozens of surrounding side streets. The exact schedule may shift depending on weather or equipment issues.
While the work is necessary for maintaining water quality and system reliability, residents may experience discolored water at times. Public Works recommends running cold water from a single tap for about 10 minutes if discoloration occurs. If the issue persists, residents should wait about 30 minutes before trying again.
City officials also caution against drying laundry if staining occurs, advising residents to contact Public Works for assistance and cleaning solutions.
The overnight schedule is intended to reduce impacts on traffic and daily water use, though some minor inconvenience is still possible during the maintenance period.
