KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Walier Chevrolet on Winchester Street hosted a special on-air event yesterday featuring guests Joseph C. Walier III, owner of Walier Chevrolet; local legend Wally Reney; and even Santa Claus. Dan Mitchell of WKBK Radio broadcast his morning show live at the dealership as part of its annual Toys for Tots toy drive, encouraging community members to drop off new, unwrapped toys to benefit children in need.

This year’s toy drive marks a significant milestone, as Keene celebrates 55 years of participation in the Toys for Tots program. The initiative was first introduced to the community in 1969 by Reney, who dedicated decades of his life to spreading Christmas cheer before retiring in 2019. Over his tenure, Reney worked with more than 50 local organizations and collected over 120,000 toys for children across the region.

The Toys for Tots program has a storied history that dates back to 1947, when Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks launched the first toy drive in Los Angeles, inspired by his wife, Diane. That inaugural effort collected 5,000 toys, and by the following year, the program had expanded to Marine Reserve sites nationwide. Walt Disney himself contributed to the cause, designing the program’s first logo—a three-car train.

In 1991, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation was established to oversee and manage the program, ensuring its continuity and success in delivering joy to children across the country. Today, the foundation handles operations, donations, and public outreach for the program.

The Keene community has always rallied around this meaningful cause, and this year was no exception. Residents came together once again to make a difference in the lives of children, continuing a tradition that embodies the spirit of giving and community.
