KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) — The Keene City Council has finalized an ordinance regulating charitable gaming facilities, marking the end of over a year of deliberations on the issue.

The council approved the ordinance during a meeting Thursday evening, establishing detailed amendments to the city’s Land Development Code, according to City Manager Elizabeth Dragon. These amendments officially define charitable gaming facilities and outline specific use standards, including location, lot size, and proximity requirements to sensitive areas like residences, places of worship, and childcare centers.

The council’s action follows concerns raised last fall when a downtown business owner proposed opening a casino, prompting debates about the suitability of such a facility in the downtown area. Throughout the process, public hearings and committee meetings addressed issues like parking, traffic, and community impact.
