KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A potentially dangerous chemical situation at the Markem-Imaje manufacturing facility on Congress Street was quickly contained by the Keene Fire Department earlier this morning, with no injuries reported.

At approximately 9:22 a.m., the Keene Fire Department received a call from the Markem-Imaje plant, reporting a 50-gallon drum of chemicals in the facility’s chemical building had begun “off-gassing,” a process where chemicals are released in gas form, according to a news release from the fire department. The situation prompted an immediate response, and within minutes, fire crews from multiple stations were on scene, including specialized hazardous materials (HazMat) units.

Keene Firefighters were met by Markem-Imaje staff, who provided details about the incident. HazMat technicians, equipped with full protective gear, entered the building to assess the situation. After confirming that there were no immediate threats}, they removed the chemical drum and moved it outside to complete the off-gassing process in a controlled environment, the release said. The team worked with Markem-Imaje chemists to identify the chemicals involved, ensuring the air and surrounding areas remained safe.

The incident was declared under control by 10:11 a.m. and the building was cleared for normal operations shortly after. There was no property damage or injuries reported, and the facility was able to resume regular activities.

The drum in question was identified as part of a normal chemical disposal process, though it unexpectedly emitted gases. Markem-Imaje has stated that they will review their internal safety protocols to prevent a recurrence.

In addition to the Keene Fire Department, mutual aid was provided by Cheshire County Ambulance, Walpole Rescue, Swanzey Engine, Chesterfield Ladder, and Brattleboro Engine. Other local fire stations were covered during the event to ensure continued emergency response capability.

No property loss or damage was reported, and a cleanup management company will handle the remaining chemical disposal.
