KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) After a months-long national search, Cheshire County officials have chosen someone close to home to lead its jail system: longtime staff member Nicholas Phillips, who has been promoted to Superintendent of the Cheshire County Department of Corrections.

Phillips, a Keene State College graduate who began working at the jail in 2018, will take over from outgoing Superintendent Doug Iosue, who praised Phillips as a steady and capable presence in the department. Phillips’ experience spans nearly every operational area in the facility, from security and booking to transportation and work programs.

His appointment signals a continued emphasis on staff development and internal leadership growth at the department, as well as a broader focus on preparing inmates for reentry into the community through mental health services and job-readiness programs.

“We are thrilled to promote from within and continue building on the department’s strong foundation under his guidance,” said County Administrator Chris Coates. “Nicholas Phillips exemplifies the kind of leadership we value in Cheshire County—dedicated, forward-thinking, and deeply committed to both staff and community.”

Phillips, who also holds an associate’s degree from NHTI – Concord’s Community College, started as a floor officer just after completing his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and sociology. Over the past seven years, he steadily rose through the ranks, taking on responsibilities such as Shift Commander and Work Crew Coordinator.

“I have had the privilege of watching Nick grow into a thoughtful and capable leader over the years,” said retiring Superintendent Doug Iosue. “I have full confidence in his ability to take the reins and guide this department with integrity and vision. The future of the CCDOC is in good hands.”
