KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) A high-speed police chase came to a dramatic conclusion in Keene Wednesday morning after officers pursued a fleeing vehicle through several major routes in the city.
The incident began around 9:30 a.m. when New Hampshire State Police tracked a Nissan pickup truck entering Keene from Sullivan on Route 9, according to a news release. The driver, identified as 57-year-old Daniel Schillemat of Nelson, NH, refused to stop for troopers, prompting Keene police to join the pursuit. Officers strategically positioned themselves to deploy spike strips in an effort to slow the vehicle.
As the chase progressed onto Route 12, tensions escalated when Schillemat allegedly drove directly at an officer who was preparing to use a tire deflation devicethe release said. Fortunately, the officer was able to get out of harm’s way without injury.
The pursuit ended near the intersection of Route 101 and Branch Road after Schillemat’s vehicle struck a spike strip and became disabled. Police took Schillemat into custody without further incident. He now faces several charges, including Disobeying an Officer, Reckless Conduct—a felony—and Reckless Operation.
Schillemat is being held on $2,500 cash bail and is scheduled to appear in Keene’s 8th Circuit Court. Authorities anticipate filing additional charges as the investigation continues, with input from both local and state police agencies.
No injuries were reported, and police credit their coordination with state troopers for bringing the situation to a safe resolution.
