KEENE, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) Ashuelot River Park in Keene was temporarily closed Tuesday afternoon following the death of a man near the park’s entrance, according to a news release from Keene Police Capt. Steve Tenney.

The call, which came in shortly after noon as a welfare check, prompted police and emergency personnel to respond quickly. Upon arrival, first responders found the man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite efforts to provide emergency medical aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Tenney said in the release.

Police closed the park for approximately two hours while conducting an investigation. It has since reopened.

The man’s identity is being withheld, pending notification of family members, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Keene police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the event or has relevant information to contact Officer Jake Dube at 357-9813 or via email at jdube@keenenh.gov.
